Polihua beach used to attract Sea turtles and historically, they would lay eggs on the beach until they found a new home. Some locals say they are starting to come around again. This beach is intended for nature, because of the strong current, it’s not safe for swimming.

It is located in Kaunakakai Molokai and the hotel features the Hula Shores Restaurant which is known for it’s authentic Hawaiian vegetables, and several seafood dishes & steaks.

Now if you are going to Europe, eating out everyday is like paying for a mortgage. IT’S EXPENSIVE. EVERYWHERE! In Europe a whopper cost 5 Euros. That’s about $7.20 USD. So just image what everything else costs. It’s crazy. Unless you are rich, get someplace with a kitchen and go grocery shopping. Shopping is comparable to the States,. A hostel, extended stay motel, hotel, anyplace you can find a kitchen. I can’t stress how important it is. Even get a Dorm. Now if you are going to the Philippines, don’t worry about getting a kitchen. The US Dollar is worth about 60-65 times the Pinoy peso. What you spend on a whopper they spend to feed their entire family for a week. So trading in your USD for Phils Peso is a good thing if you are taking a vacation to anyplace like that. Just a thought. One my last trip to London, I thought I was being smart by just looking for a cheap place to stay for my vacation…Kitchen..who needs it! How wrong I was. I would of been better off getting a more expensive motel with a kitchen and buying my food. When I tallied all my expenses up, just for food, just for myself, and my girlfriend, it came to 700 USD. That’s 2 car payments! Get a kitchen!

Myself and three other adults are planning to stay and work in Las Vegas for about three to four months. We will be looking for extended stay motels or an affordable furnished rental to accommodate all four of us. Does anyone have any leads on locating the best places to look? Oh, yes, I can use a search engine, but I don’t seem to be getting the right kind of results.

Just a little addition, jobs are secured. I’m just trying to secure a place to stay without having to empty my pockets to do so.

Frankly, prices are so low in Vegas right now you’re far better off just renting a furnished townhouse or house. The people you’ll be living alongside at an extended stay motel aren’t necessarily the best, and when rents are so cheap at regular apartments, the ones in extended stays are really the worst of the worst.

Also, be careful of the neighborhoods. Vegas is odd in that while there are some bad parts of town, there are also tiny, bad pockets here and there, too.

Green Valley and Summerlin are nice neighborhoods. Maybe include “gated” in your search terms.

The beach has been given the nickname "Tunnels" due to the large number of caverns discovered by underwater adventurers. There is typically a lifeguard on duty and you can obtain a permit if you would like to camp here. This beach is not recommended if you want to surf during your vacation, however it is highly recommended for it’s unsurpassed snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Another Beach in North Kauai is Hanalei Bay. It is easily within walking distance of Hanalei Town. This beach is an impressive 2 miles long and also offers an array of fun activities for the entire family to enjoy, such as sailing, swimming, surfing, fishing and body boarding. Because this is a "Sand Beach", the snorkeling is not as impressive as Makua Beach, however it is more suitable for surfing. There are several Lifeguard stations located up and down the beach, and it’s probably a good idea to check with the lifeguards first if you want to go out canoeing. The beach is not always calm enough for paddling around.

If you are looking to enjoy the peace and serenity of the setting sun and you are looking for a little adventure along the way, a Western Kauai Beach might be what you are looking for. One such beach located on the west side coastline of Kauai is called Na Pali. Translated, "Na Pali" means "The Cliffs". There are 15 miles of rugged & steep cliffs with very remote sandy beaches dotted along the way. This area of Hawaiian beaches is certainly more suitable for the adventurous type of vacationer. However caution is urged because there are no lifeguards and no rescue support readily available due to it’s remote location. Although the sandy beaches are good for swimming, most people come here to hike amid the breathtaking scenery and sheer cliffs. Just be very careful. The cliffs can be slippery and the currents and winds can be dangerous. Camping is also very popular in this area. However if you are bringing children or are looking for a family type of vacation, this is probably not the beach for you.

Kauai Beach in Hawaii

Taylors Falls, Minnesota (Population 1,054) is a small town located 45 miles northeast of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis & St Paul, MN. This historic village is well known for scenery, adventure and natural beauty preserved for thousands of years. The area attracts tourists from all over the world, and summer tourism can reach up to 5,000 visitors on any given day. Taylors Falls and the adjoining St. Croix River Valley offer several types of lodging & accommodations such as camping, Bed & Breakfast houses, as well as numerous Extended Stay Motels and Hotels. The town and it’s surrounding areas also have State Parks for Tent camping as well as camper cabins and camping sites with electrical hookups for all of your vacation needs.

Nearby at William O’ Brien State Park the accommodations are numerous, and include picnic and shelter areas, volleyball, horseshoes, a golf course (within 10 miles), a ballfield with a backstop, a fishing pier, swimming beach, as well as a boat launch and three year-round, rental cabins. They also have showers and toilets, and all accommodations are Handicapped accessible.

Wild River State Park is a 6,803 acre area located in Center City MN, which is a close neighbor to Taylors Falls. They also have camper cabins. For the nature lover, they have access to river boating, snowshoeing, skiing, horseback riding, canoeing, boating and excellent fishing.

Our family decided to stay at the "Holiday Inn Express" Hotel which is located in St. Croix Falls Wisconsin (about six blocks from downtown Taylor’s Falls on the other side of the St Croix River) Our greeting from the hotel staff at the reservation desk was very courteous and helpful. Since we were a little bit indecisive, we asked to see a couple of rooms before we made our decision. The staff gladly allowed us to do so. At this time we discovered that the hotel has 80 rooms, 4 of which are designated "Smoking Rooms." The rest are designated "Non-Smoking" rooms. Unique in style, our room was (L) shaped, and it had one king-sized bed as well as a comfortable sofa sleeper that the kids slept on. Around the corner was a table and two chairs, a microwave, sink, refrigerator and a coffee maker as well as adjustable lighting above the table. It was a great set-up for heating up leftovers or preparing meals for an extended stay vacation. This room would certainly qualify as an extended stay motel/hotel room. You would have no problem staying here for an extended period of time. The bathroom was very clean, and the amenities included a wall hair dryer, plenty of bath and hand towels as well as soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner. In the closet there were two extra pillows and an iron and board. This hotel also will allow you to purchase all of the items found in your room such as the hair dryer or iron, if you would like to take one with you for the rest of your trip. I thought that was a nice feature. Another nice feature of this hotel that I really enjoyed was the original artwork hanging on the walls throughout the entire main floor, as well as the dining area. Apparently the owners’ mother-in-law is a professional artist and she displays her artwork there. They even go so far as changing the paintings to match the present time of year. The dining area was very nice and clean, and featured couches, lounging chairs and a fireplace to cozy up to. It felt more like home than at a hotel, which was very appealing to me. I really enjoyed eating the complimentary breakfast there every morning.

Since our grandchildren like to spend most of their free time in the swimming pool and whirlpool, I like the pool area to smell clean, and not over bearing with any odors. The pool area at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel is one of the cleanest I have seen. I also like to use my keen sense of smell when judging a hotel swimming pool area. When I first open the door to a Hotel pool area, my sense of smell is most accurate, if I can smell strong mold or mildew odors, I may want to think twice about jumping in. I could tell right away the pool area at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel is well maintained because it smelled clean without the harsh odors. I give it 5 stars out of 5. Your family will enjoy swimming here.

It was later in the evening when we decided to have dinner. Although there was a café located right outside the hotel within easy walking distance, it was a Sunday night and they were getting ready to close. Another option we considered since we had a mini kitchen area in our hotel room, was picking up something from the grocery store located right across the street that was open 24 hours. (Again handy for those extended stays) One of the Hotel staff suggested a place called "Wayne’s Truck Stop". It was located less than a mile down the road from our Hotel. What a great place to eat with it’s hometown cooking and affordable prices! Our waitress was very friendly and patient and the quality and quantity of food was great. I could tell that the food was homemade and fresh. We also brought homemade pie back to our hotel for a late night snack. I am one of those people who want all of the comforts of home when traveling, and I like a circulating fan, extra blankets and pillows. When we were ready to turn in, I called the Hotel front desk to request these items, they had everything at our door within five minutes. Now that’s service.

There is a lot of very interesting history in Taylor’s Falls. The Interstate Park dates back to 1837 when the Ojibway (Chippewa) Indians allowed the United States to acquire lumbering rights (Minnesota) to harvest the rich virgin pine tree forest. In 1838, Baker and Taylor arrived from Fort Snelling to make a claim on the West bank of the St Croix. At that time they began construction of the mill complex, and marking the beginning of the first permanent settlement. In 1846, Baker and Taylor sold the claim and holdings to Joshua L. Taylor for two hundred dollars. The town was first plats and surveyed in 1851, at this time the young settlement was officially designated “Taylors Falls.” There were no roads leading to Taylors Falls, the only “highway” was the St. Croix river, traveled by steamboat, barge or birch-bark canoe. (Now that’s a true Adventure Vacation) The only other means of travel to Taylors Falls was on foot or horseback, through intertwining forest trails. In 1853, a road was finally cut through wooded areas such as Point Douglas, (Hastings) by way of Stillwater to Taylors Falls and further north to lake Superior. That same year the first bridge was built at Taylors Falls, and it was the first bridge to span across the St. Croix River. By 1880, tourism began to travel in to the town by train. Reporters from all over the world traveled to take photos of "The Little Switzerland" as it was called, given in reference to the rock formations, sheer cliffs and the glacial gardens. In 1891, the pristine area was established as a Minnesota Interstate park.

When visiting Taylors Falls be prepared to let your curiosity get the best of you. There are two hundred ninety three miles of acreage with several trails including safety rails that lead you to some of the world’s most beautiful scenic views of Glacial rock formations. You will see shallow and deep potholes formed by glaciers thousands of years ago, as well as a cave or two. You will see many hikers, rock climbers (permits and ID required) families wandering around as well as canoeing and paddle boat tours enjoying the St. Croix River. There are also several scenic parks in the area. Heritage Park which is located on Hwy. 95, has spectacular views of the St. Croix River Valley. They also have picnic pavilions, and wild flower walking paths. Cherry Hill Park is currently under preliminary design, but it is famous for a lighted ice-skating rink and beautiful scenery. North of town located on Co. Rd. 16 (a.k.a. "Wild Mountain Road") is Lions Park, on the north side of the park are picnic shelters, sand volleyball and trails. On the south side, there is a boat landing and more breathtaking hiking trails. From downtown Taylors Falls to the Minnesota side of Interstate Park, they have a pedestrian friendly River Walk park, that is located under the Highway 8 bridge and is considered a “must see” view of the river.

Remember the only thing separating Minnesota from Wisconsin is the river, so in about a ten-mile radius on both sides of the river, you can find a variety of restaurants ranging from casual to fine dining. In Taylors Falls there is a casual restaurant called “Schooneys Malt Shop and Pizzeria,” and is considered to have the best food in town for quality and price. The Border Bar & Grill is also listed under casual as well as Romaynes Bar & Grill. If you are in a hurry, there is McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken. A couple of Fine dining restaurants are “The Chisago House” and a place called “Tangled up in Blue.”

Other local attractions include Wild Mountain Water Park which is located just 7 miles north of Taylors Falls. Great for the family on a hot day! At Wild Mountain, they also feature Alpine slides that coast down 1700 ft. to the bottom of the mountain. If you like a little extra adventure, the Park also features "formula-k" go-kart tracks. The adults can drive between 15-20 mph, but kiddie side go-karts are set at 5 mph.

Taylors Falls and the St. Croix River area, has something to offer any age traveler. If you are on a road trip or just passing through, stop in for a meal. If you are staying a night or two or planning an extended stay vacation, remember the Holiday Inn Express for Extended Stay Motels.

Taylor’s Falls Minnesota

Something I took for granted when I first started traveling was that my cellphone would work no matter where I went, and that I would simply have to pay roaming charges. That couldn’t of been further from the truth. The minute I stepped off the plane in Spain, my cellphone couldn’t reach a single carrier, and neither will yours without a world wide coverage plan, or a new sim card. A sim card is simply a card you place in your phone that will allow you to connect to a local cellphone carrier. You can buy them at any airport you visit. In fact the choice for new sims or calling plans in an overseas airport is as vast as the food venders at your local state fair. But speak the language, or you can be taken.

There are a many other ways to communicate internationally. One is to have satellite internet coverage on your phone, where you can use programs such as instant messengers to communicate. Skype is a big one. In fact if you have satellite internet coverage on your phone, simply load up the mobile phone version of skype and start calling anywhere you want. But again, unless you have a service that allows international connection to the internet, this will not work either. I have T-Mobile. so I called them up and signed up for their world wide roaming plan. But at 99 cents a minute, I used my cell phone sparingly. The name of the game is plan, plan, plan! Call you cell phone provider and ask questions. You may need a special sim card put in your phone to use world wide roaming. So you may need to take your phone to your local cell phone dealer. If you’re not so worried about a cell phone, your laptop is a great way to communicate in almost all extended stay motels, hotels, inns, …anywhere they provide internet access. My suggestion, connect to the internet, and use Skype to communicate. The video feed is almost like seeing the person in real life. It’s very fast. The audio feed is just as superior. It’s amazing, and it doesn’t cost you anything if the other person has Skype. If not skype use any number of the other IM services out there. But I’ve tried them all and Skype is the only one that seemed to reliably work across the oceans without a problem. I’m not even close to an expert in this field. So if anyone has another suggestion please feel free to list them.

Cellphones and WorldWide Coverage

Over the past twenty five years of travel, my companion(s) and I always recite the same words at the first glance of our motel or hotel room “Well this is it, our home for the next several days.” The first area I inspect is the bathroom because it needs to be spotless, fully stocked with things like clean fluffy towels, wash cloths, toilet paper, soap & shampoo. Then I move onto additional amenities such as the hair dryer or to check if the metal air vent is clogged with dust/ hair balls. I check the T.V. and remote, and the view out of our window. In addition I make sure the cooling/ heating unit works, the closets have hangers, ice buckets and plastic cups as well as a microwave and/or refrigerator. Basically all of the amenities that are promised upon booking the room, and besides I’m not staying just one night, I am staying for an extended amount of time. Sound a bit picky? I am, and I want all the comforts of home at a great price.

I decided it was time to look specifically at extended stay motels for my budget and expectations. There are several types of extended stay lodging facilities all over the world, but for now I will focus on the rates for a three-week stay in the USA. A passport is usually a small book almost as detailed as the money we have today. Encoded with varies colors and other patterns, layers, codes that are virtually impossible to forge. In the U.S. once you obtain your passport you will notice about 10 or 11 empty pages, and (in the new passport books) you will also find an electronic sticker. Kind of like you see on the back of a credit cards or drivers licenses to further make it much harder to forge. The purpose of the passport is to show that the country you are from, i.e., The United States has granted you permission to visit any country where all you need is a passport to enter. Such as London, Madrid etc.. the list is vast. Once you arrive in your place of destination you would show your passport to the immigration check desk where they will see that you are approved for travel by your country, and if all checks out, they will stamp your passport signifying you are eligible to "visit" their country. I say visit! If you plan to live there, you will need to obtain a citizenship type visa from the country you wish to stay in. This can not be granted by your home country. Which brings us to what a visa is.

Some countries, i.e., Asian Countries, third world countries…etc, will not allow you to simply come to their country on a passport alone. You will need to obtain a visa. This is for three reasons, and was explained to me by one of the people certified to issue passports and visas at my local court house. She said, one, usually these countries do not have strong ties to the U.S, so the trust issue is not there. Two, these countries are usually communist or socialist in government and carefully monitor all who enter and leave for control. Three…Money. When you sign up for a passport you usually pay your local court house the passport fee. Mine was $79. And your passport is good for the next 10 years. But a visa you have to not only pay a fee to your country, but also to the country you wish to visit. They want a piece of the pie. Now I’m sure there’s a more politically correct way to say all this, but this is how it was explained to me, and it makes sense.

How to obtain a passport or visa. It’s simple. First do not have warrants against you. Do not be a felon, and basically have a clean record. If you do not, your application will most likely be turned down. All you do is go to your local courthouse, ask where you apply for a passport, they will tell you, and at the station you will see a form for new applicants for passports. You grab the form and fill it out. It’s not tough, and takes about 5 minutes. You will need, however, two valid forms of identification and your SS card. Some say you need to bring an extra picture, and they will use that picture for your passport, but if you don’t have one, they will take one for you. That’s about it. You pay the fee and they will tell you that you should expect it within 4-6 weeks. If you are in good standing with the U.S. there’s really no reason you should be denied. The Visa was just as easy. I needed a visa to the Philippines. I told them where I wanted to go, they gave me a form. It took about 5 minutes to fill out, and I paid the fee. $55. I was told I would have to wait 3-6 weeks. Again, though, I just needed 2 forms of id and my SS. And my passport. You definitely need a passport to get a visa. That’s how simple it is for Americans to travel. If you can’t wait the 3-6 weeks to get your passport or visa, there are certain agencies that can get your passport or visa to you within 24-48 hours.

Losing your passport in another country can be a nightmare! I can’t stress this enough. Guard your passport with your life. In other countries, you’ll need to show your passport many times over. I.E. to get into lodging (hotels, extended stay motels, bed and breakfast, inns, vacation rental properties, car rental), trains, places of business. Even if you look suspicious the police have the right to ask for your passport. And you can not get back on your plane to go home without it. You’ll be stuck and forced to pay more fees to get a temporary passport to get back home, that’s of course providing you didn’t lose your identification as well. If you lose that you’re in for a whirlwind. Visiting international destinations can be great, but always keep track of your identification.

What’s the difference between extended stay motels and a hostel? The differences are not so subtle. Hostel (some spell it hostals) are usually associated with European countries, where motels are usually associated with the United States. The biggest difference is usually the hostel is a room usually without a private bathroom and a shared common area, such as the kitchen, tv room, locker room and so forth. Sometimes that means that your particular room is rented out to more than one party. You’ll have a bathroom in your room, or space, but you’ll have to share it with the other renters of your hostel. In a motel, what you get is usually just a step down from a hotel. You don’t get the lobby and the long walks to your room, but you’ll usually get your own private bathroom. Both offer free room cleaning, tv…the usual amenities you would come to expect. When I first went to Spain, I stayed in a hostel. Which turned out to be an apartment building owned by one person. There were many tenants there that were permanent renters, while the rooms around the owner of the building were rented out. My girlfriend and I didn’t have to share with anyone else, and we did have our own bathroom, but there were certain things that really bothered us. One was the noise. Not from others, but from us. Around 10pm or so, you had to be very very quiet otherwise the owner would knock on your door and start telling you the rules of land. The other, which surprised me, especially being an American, was the control of electricity! At my home or any hotel / motel I’ve ever stayed in, you could bring your computer, turn on the tv, run the air conditioning, use your fridge, and plug in my phone for recharging. But here, there was none of that. You were allowed to only plug in two electrical items at once. Anything more and the electricity would be turned off until the manager or keeper turned your power back on. If that wasn’t bad enough, the owners have no problems telling you how to use the electricity wisely, and how bad you are for not following the rules. After about 2 days of this place, we found another hostel and moved our stuff to that place, but this time there were absolutely no restrictions on electricity, which was very nice. So all in all, if you want to save money overseas, it’s not a bad idea to get yourself a hostel. The cost is very cheap, and can be used as an extended stay motel / hostel. Just be sure to check the reviews of the place before hand. They usually run in the neighborhood of 20 – 37 euros a day. Which is not bad, but you lose alot of privacy. There are also several motels in the european area, although most of those were called inns. They were about double the price, but offered you the same luxuries (with no electrical limits) as the motels here in the States.
